The process of recruiting an apprentice

1. The job description

An apprenticeship is a real job: it is a job that needs doing in your business or organisation. Therefore it has to have a job description based on the reality of the work you want your apprentice to do. Remember though, the jobs are entry level jobs into the industry based on assistant roles. The level of responsibility, nature of the duty and knowledge and skills you require of an apprentice job description need to reflect this.

The jobs will be advertised at the Apprentice salary of £110 / week. This can vary depending on circumstances: some employers pay more, a few pay less.

2. The qualification requirements

As part of their apprenticeship with Creative Alliance, as apprentice is required to:

  • Attend training one day a week for about 24 days over six months with us: this will give them knowledge and skills directly transferable back to your workplace;
  • Keep a portfolio of evidence of what they do at work and demonstrate how those duties are providing evidence for the qualification.
  • They receive monthly visits from an assessor whose role it is to help the apprentice and employer ensure that they are working towards their qualification.

3. The advertising process

The post is advertised on the National Apprenticeship website. Young people interested in apprenticeships regularly search the website for apprenticeships they would be interested in. You can advertise the opportunity through your own channels as well however you need to direct people to the National Apprenticeship Website to apply. In the first instance it is an online application form on the NAS website that is completed by candidates that is then forwarded onto you.

4. The selection process

The selection process should be in line with your own recruitment and selection processes. Creative Alliance can support you in this should you require. You need to decide:

  • Who will be in overall charge of your recruitment.
  • What timescale you are working to: when would you want roles advertised, how long would you want them public, how long do you want to leave between short listing and interview.
  • What type of interview process do you want to undertake.

Our experience is that creative apprentices opportunities may attract anywhere between 50 and 100 applications. That may be something to factor in when considering how you want to organise the recruitment process.

Please do not hesitate to contact Creative Alliance if you require any further information whilst deciding how you want to proceed.
