18.11.09 // The custard factory
The Custard Factory, built over 100 years ago by Sir Arthur Bird once was a bustling centre of business in the custard making industry with over 1000 employees working here until the late 1980’s where the factory fell derelict, until it was saved and became a centre for Birmingham’s best and brightest young artists.
Today the interest in becoming part of thriving community here is still overwhelming. There is a huge strive to prove that Birmingham and not just places like London can provide the future stars of the Arts and Culture world, In one such interview today we asked Lucy Mouran an intern from Wolverhampton at the Rouge Theatre Company what she thought of the factory and the people here;
She said “I love working here and as I want to, one day to perform in the theatre so this is great experience for me and to work with the people I do, its just a dream, they are very professional and very creative.”
We asked her about the general tone of people at the Custard factory as a whole and she told us that “People around the place are very friendly and there are always many investigative people walking round much like yourselves.”
We also found out that at the bead shop where an employee named Kate told us that although the building in her view was a bit dim, what the people that have moved businesses into the factory have done an amazing job and that because of the appeal to tourists and visitors to Birmingham being based in the Custard factory is a good business prospect especially if you want to appreciate the art in the gallery and creative shops around the area.
