Apprenticeships & the Plan for Jobs

What was the Government’s announcement?

The Government announced its Plan for Jobs in August 2020. It’ was a clear statement of intent that skills and work based learning are at the centre of policy decisions to rebuild the economy. The focus is on enabling young people to experience work and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours for work.

Payments for employers who hire new apprentices:

  • A new payment of £2,000 to employers for each new apprentice they hire aged under 25.
  • A new payment of £1,500 payment for each new apprentice they hire aged 25 and over.
  • This will run from 1st August 2020 to 30th of March 2021.
  • These payments will be in addition to the existing £1,000 payment the government already provides for new 16-18 year-old apprentices, and those aged under 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan.

With additional investment in traineeships, careers education, new short Level 3 courses for 18 & 19 year olds and the Kick Start scheme whereby the wages of the most vulnerable young people on Universal Credit will be paid for at National Minimum Wage for 25 hours for six months, this is the most radical investment in work based learning ever seen.

It reflects a confidence in an apprenticeship system that has undergone a revolution in the last three years. If it’s a while since you looked at apprenticeships, or indeed have never really considered them, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

So, for employers in the West Midlands you can now get ALL the costs of the training covered by, through Creative Alliance, using the West Midlands Combined Authority levy transfer scheme.

And

Have the following contributions to the salary of an apprentice paid for:

  • 16-18 year olds                 £3000
  • 19-24 year olds                 £2000
  • 25+                                      £1500

With the potential to link this to the Kick Start scheme if the apprentice you appoint is on Universal Credit.

NOW is the time to recruit.

“Thanks for coming in today Matt.  Your approach was refreshing, direct and I can tell you have empathy with what we are trying to do here.”
