DMB.digital & Creative Alliance invite you to a breakfast meeting to hear about talent development in the digital media sector with speakers from the BBC, Birmingham City University and other employers.
Getting the right people, with the right skills and the right attitude to work is the alchemy of the 21st Century. There are whole industries dedicated to achieving it and yet individual business owners looking to hire talent to grow their business recurrently cite a lack of available talent as a significant barrier to growth.
The Industrial strategy announced two months ago has people & skills as its first foundation to improve productivity & growth and digital skills is at the heart of it:
People
- establish a technical education system that rivals the best in the world to stand alongside our world-class higher education system
- invest an additional £406 million in maths, digital and technical education, helping to address the shortage of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills
- create a new National Retraining Scheme that supports people to re-skill, beginning with a £64 million investment for digital and construction training
The situation in the West Midlands is more challenging. A recent review of the situation was published by the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce
It highlights a complex picture in which education, employers, learners and national and regional agencies all have a role and a responsibility. We know what the issues are. Knowing where and how to start addressing them is more challenging.
One breakfast conversation is not going to provide that instant illumination. It will contribute to a greater understanding of how employers and the education and training sectors can work more effectively together. Far too often conversation is treated as a one-off consultation: ‘you asked me, I told you’. This creates frustration when the instant solution is not forthcoming. Unfortunately, talent development is more complex than online shopping but sometimes the mindset we bring to online shopping affects how we view purchasing talent.
