Myth Busting: Apprenticeships

It’s National Apprenticeship Week 2024! During this week we will be joining the celebration and discussions about creative apprenticeships. Apprenticeships bring both value and opportunities to people of any age to develop their careers and acquire the work experience needed these days to have a successful career.

Through the many years that Creative Alliance has supported talent into creative roles, we have seen how creative apprenticeships have supported the development of graphic designers, video editors, venue technicians, social media creators and many other roles, with remarkable success within their workplaces.

On the other hand, we also hear from people that it can be difficult to get information about apprenticeships or have notions about them that are either incomplete or not entirely true. Therefore, we are starting #NAW2024 providing our experience into these trending myths, and how apprenticeships can be good for all!

MYTH 1:

APPRENTICESHIPS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE TO YOUNG PEOPLE

We hear this too often: “I am too old to do an apprenticeship,” “What is the age limit for an apprenticeship? “Can you do an apprenticeship at any age?” The answer to all of this is: Yes, you can do an apprenticeship!

The only age limitation set by the government is for apprentices to be at least 16 years old…no cap! So, anyone can start (or change) their career through an apprenticeship at any age.

MYTH 2:

APPRENTICESHIPS ARE LIMITED TO TRADITIONAL INDUSTRIES AND ARE NOT RELEVANT TO MY SECTOR

We get this from both employers looking to hire apprentices and people looking to get into an apprenticeship. You would be surprised to discover the many careers that apprenticeships standards cover. There is a career path for any role, the important thing is to understand the skills you need (for your business) or want to learn (for your career).

You can find out more about all the apprenticeships available on the government website. We are always happy to provide guidance and support, just get in touch and we will get back to you.

MYTH 3:

APPRENTICESHIPS ARE LOW-LEVEL QUALIFICATIONS, THAT DO NOT AMOUNT TO MUCH

Through the apprenticeship programme you could start at a foundational level (level 2, or level 3), but there are progression routes that go all the way up to Level 6 and Level 7, which are known as High Level Apprenticeships or Degree Apprenticeships, that provide a qualification level equivalent to a master’s degree.

This means that learners can get not only the benefits and prestige that comes with higher levels of education, but also the work experience that apprenticeships provide due to being on the job.

In the creative industry, there can be many barriers to getting a career started, or difficulty in hiring new talent that can become a good fit for a company. At Creative Alliance we have noticed that when there is more understanding of apprenticeships, they can provide an alternative path to traditional education for learners, and to recruitment for employers.

We hope that this sample of myth-busting has provided more insight into the impact apprenticeships can have on your future. If you have any questions or want more information check out our dedicated pages for Employers and Apprentices, or reach out to a member of our team.
