Attending a careers fair? Top 5 tips to make the most of your day!

Deciding what you want to do when you leave school or college can be confusing. With so many options to choose from and so much information to digest, it can be hard to know where to start.

Attending events like What University? & What Career? Live is the perfect opportunity to explore your options under one roof. You’ll have the opportunity to chat to representatives from universities & employers to learn more about what they offer, and what they are looking for in a successful applicant.

The Creative Alliance is excited to announce that we will be hosting the Creative Hub at the next event – What University? & What Career? Live on Friday 4 & Saturday 5 March at the NEC, Birmingham. Come along to chat to the team or catch our presentations on apprenticeship routes into creative events.

To take full advantage of the event, here’s our top 5 tips to help you make the most out of your visit:

1. Come prepared

Check out the Show Guide in advance to see who’s exhibiting and the talk timetable – make a list of universities/colleges and employers you want to find out more about and what you’d like to ask them. Consider drafting your CV and bring a printout. Don’t be put off by not having a lot to put on there – you can get help with that (see tip 3)!

2. Hear from experts

Watch as many presentations that cover your interests as possible, whether it’s a career in health, studying sport or your future in the creative industries. You may be surprised by the options out there and you may discover possibilities you didn’t even know existed!

3. Get all the free advice available – and be hands-on!

Careers advisers, workshops and other drop-in advice centres are there to help you – yes, you! Improve your employability and hone your confidence in a future skills workshop or take along your current resumé for an upgrade at the CV Clinic.

4. Visit the Hub

Thinking about a career in the creative sector? Chat to the team from Creative Alliance to find out how they could help you unleash your creative talent through an apprenticeship. Learn more about roles in marketing, broadcasting, advertising, software development, design, events and more.

5. Ask lots of questions! For example –

For employers:

  • What type of apprenticeships do you offer?
  • What are you looking for in potential candidates for your apprenticeship scheme?
  • How long does it take to progress in the company?

For universities/colleges:

  • What results will I need to get on the course I am interested?
  • What is student life like in the town/city you are based?
  • Tell me about employability – what do your graduates go on to do?

It’s not over after the event! If you still have questions unanswered or found something appealing that you want to pursue, follow up while it is fresh in your mind.

As you explore the event, ask for the contact details of people that you speak to, or find out who you should contact if you have any further queries, so you know where to go if you remember an important question on your way home!
