PRODUCTION TECHNICIAN

This occupation is found in creative settings. This ranges from outside locations, entertainment venues and theatres, through to organisations that provide technical solutions for the setup of live, recorded and streamed events.

The Production Technician Apprenticeship Standard that Creative Alliance delivers has two pathways/options: Creative Venue Technician or Live Events Technician.

Creative Venue Technician

Creative Venue Technicians provide technical support for the construction, rehearsal, presentation and removal of a live performance, for audience or camera.

They will play an active role in the technical operation across a variety of established creative venues, for example, theatres, arts centres and broadcast studios. They will become competent in lighting, audio, video and building services related to the performance arts and apply them to their resident premises and / or production.

Throughout their apprenticeship a learner will do up to 16 projects that will make up part of their portfolio, below are three examples of the types of project they will do.

Project 1 – Health Safety: Learning the H&S fundamentals to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others.

Project 2 – How to produce a risk assessment: Learn how to write a risk assessment to ensure that control measures are put in place to keep you and your co-workers safe.

Project 3 – Stage management and production management: Learn the roles of a stage manager and their team and the role of a production manager and their importance to a production.

End point Assessment

For the Creative Venue Technician there is an end
point assessment. This is done in the final part of the apprenticeship and is how the apprentice is judged on their learning. There are two main parts to the EPA but these are completed in a day.

The Creative Venue Technician End Point Assessment (EPA) involves the following:

• Practical Observation
• Professional Discussion (Underpinned by the Portfolio)

Live Events Technician

Live Event Technicians prepare & set-up technical equipment for live events, such as concerts, festival and theatrical performances.

A Live Event Technician will be part of the team that turns a venue into a functioning event environment before returning the site to its original state, often within a short time frame. Outside the event environment, Technicians are responsible for the control, servicing, repair and storage of complex technical equipment. In any context working safely and ethically is paramount and many projects are carried out in fast moving, dynamic workplaces.
