Scenic Automation Technician Apprentices play a crucial role in creating dynamic, immersive performances—blending engineering and creativity to bring ambitious stage visions to life. They support the technical delivery of moving scenic elements in live performance environments, including theatre, film, television, and live events.
They work alongside automation specialists, stage engineers, and production teams to bring motion to sets, props, and sometimes performers—ensuring safe, smooth, and creative staging solutions.
Working with a range of mechanical and electrical systems, apprentices learn how to install, operate, and maintain automation equipment such as winches, hoists, tracks, and motion control software. They assist in rigging and testing equipment, troubleshooting technical issues, and helping to deliver precise movement cues during rehearsals and performances.
Throughout their training, apprentices gain hands-on experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), safety systems, and industry-standard software. They also learn how to interpret technical drawings, collaborate with design and production teams, and respond in real-time to changes or challenges in a fast-paced, live environment.
